Rides
Multiple timed routes let you choose your challenge — from a scenic 25-mile cruise to the full 100-mile century ride through San Luis Obispo County's coastal and wine country terrain.
| Distance | Start Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Mile | Timed | A shorter route ideal for newer riders or those wanting a relaxed coastal spin. |
| 50 Mile | Timed | A mid-distance challenge with rolling hills and vineyard views. |
| 75 Mile | Timed | A demanding route bridging the gap to the full century. |
| 100 Mile | Timed | The signature century ride — the full SLO GranFondo experience. |
Riders arriving for the SLO GranFondo weekend will find a carefully orchestrated schedule designed to accommodate everyone from first-time century participants to seasoned racers. The timed starts roll out in waves, allowing each rider to settle into their preferred pace without the pressure of a crowded pack. Morning departures take advantage of the cool coastal air, and the staggered starts ensure that the roads remain manageable throughout the day. Whether you are aiming for a personal best or simply hoping to enjoy the scenery, the structured timing keeps the experience safe, smooth, and rewarding for all skill levels across every distance option.
The route offerings span a range of distances that showcase the best of San Luis Obispo County's diverse terrain. Shorter loops stay close to the coast, treating riders to ocean views and gentle gradients that make for a pleasant morning on the bike. The middle-distance routes begin to introduce the rolling hills that define the region's wine country landscape, with vineyards and ranchlands unfolding at every turn. For those seeking the full challenge, the century distance pushes deeper into the countryside, climbing through oak-studded valleys and rewarding efforts with long, scenic descents that make the miles feel worthwhile.
Beyond the rides themselves, the weekend schedule includes a pro panel reception that brings accomplished cyclists together with participants for an evening of conversation and insight. This gathering offers a rare chance to hear firsthand stories from athletes who have competed at the highest levels, covering topics like training strategies, nutrition, and the mental approach to long-distance riding. The reception creates a community atmosphere that blurs the line between spectator and participant, reminding everyone that the GranFondo is as much about shared passion for cycling as it is about personal achievement on the road.
The Festivale Italiano stands as the centerpiece of the weekend's social calendar, drawing inspiration from the Italian cycling culture that gave birth to the granfondo tradition. Live music, local food vendors, and a festive atmosphere transform the event space into a celebration of both cycling and community. Riders and their families gather under the open air to share stories from the day's ride, enjoy a well-earned meal, and soak in the camaraderie that defines this annual gathering. The festival embodies the spirit of the event: a blend of athletic endeavor and genuine hospitality.
Throughout the weekend, the event infrastructure supports riders with clearly marked aid stations, mechanical support, and volunteer teams stationed at key points along every route. These resources allow participants to focus on the experience rather than logistics, knowing that help is never far away if needed. The schedule also accounts for post-ride recovery, with designated areas for stretching, hydration, and informal socializing. By the time the final rider crosses the line, the weekend has offered not just a physical challenge but a complete immersion into the cycling culture of California's Central Coast.
Pro Panel Reception
On the evening before race day, a Pro Panel Reception brings together guest speakers from the professional peloton. Past receptions have featured Bob Roll, Dotsie Bausch, and other notable riders sharing stories, insight, and inspiration.
The November 14, 2015 reception was held at the Old Custom House in Avila Beach. Attendees got up close with cycling industry experts and top riders over drinks and conversation.
Festivale Italiano
After the rides conclude, the Festivale Italiano celebrates the day with food, wine, and community. This post-race gathering is a hallmark of the SLO GranFondo weekend — riders, families, and volunteers come together to enjoy Italian-inspired fare and local wines in a festive atmosphere.
